The Qabalah: its Powers and Purpose in Ritual Magick. An Open Class. Session 1.

This is my third attempt to post this open class to this Group. The word Qabalah means "Collection" and, in its Hebrew form of QBL, (Qoph Beth Lamed) "to receive". What do you receive, you might ask? You receive Knowledge, Understanding and Wisdom. The Three Virtues.

The two main books of the Qabalah are the Sepher Yetzirah and the Zohar. The Sepher Yetzirah is also known as the "Book of Formation". The Zohar or the Sepher Zohar is also known as the "Book of Concealed Wisdom", and as the "Book of Splendour" and the "Book of Radiance". Yet another name for the Zohar is the "Book of Brightness".

For Ritual Magicians the most important aspect of the Qabalah is the use of a glyph known as "The Tree of Life" also known as the "Autz Hz-Chaiim." The other important aspect of the Qabalah to Ritual Magickians and to Diviners is the Number Systems of Gematria and Ntariqon. The Ntariqon is seen as the Qabalistic theory of acronyms. This may be out of print, but the best book on these subjects is "Godwin's Cabalistic Encyclopedia: A Complete Guide to Cabalistic Magick." This book is amazing. If you are interested in these subjects you will find it hard to put this book down.

There are 22 Hebrew letters in the Hebrew Alphabet. It so happens that there are 22 Major Trumps in a traditional Tarot deck. These 22 Hebrew letters are assigned to the 22 Major Trumps. This connection increases the power of the Major Trumps. But it goes a step further; the 22 Major Trumps are also the 22 Paths on the Qabalistic Tree of Life.

Now I would like to give you an example of how Gematria works. Let's take one of Crowley's favorite numbers: The number I have chosen is 418. By using the Qabalistic Dictionary we find there are 3 meanings to this number: 1. 418 = in Gematria ChYTh= Cheth the 8th letter of the Hebrew Alphabet which is also the Major Trump "the Chariot" or "Charioteer" Key 7. This card also is the Astrological sign Cancer, which I am happy to say is my sign. Cheth means Fence or Enclosure. 2. ABRAHADABRA this is Crowley's spelling of Abracadabra. This is a very famous magickial word which may have it's origins in Babylonian and Sumerian Magickial Tradition. This Magickial word was used to ward off fevers and the plague. The Hebrew version of this word is ABRAKALA. 3. 418 = RA HWWR = Ra-Hoor = Ra-Horus, an Egyptian God who figures strongly in Crowley's Book of the Law. Ra-Horus is actually 2 Gods in One: Ra the older Sun God and Horus the younger Sun God. I am sure there must be other meanings for 418 but these are the Major ones.

The Last thing we are going to deal with in this first installment of this open class on the Qabalah will be the Tree of Life Glyph or Autz Hz Chaiim. The Tree of Life is comprised of what are called the 32 Emanations. The 32 Emanations represent the 10 what are call called Sephira or Spheres and the 22 Paths which as we have said before are the 22 Major Trumps of the Traditional Tarot.

• The first Sephira is Kether or the Crown. The 4 Aces of the Tarot are placed in this location. Kether represents the highest level of spiritual awareness. Some of you might see this as the Crown Chakra of the Chakra System. Its number is one.
• The next Sephira is Chokmah or Wisdom. The four Twos fall in this place and the Suit of Wands and the four Kings. Chokmah is the highest level of Wisdom. It's number is 2.
• The next Sephira is Binah or Understanding. The four 3's fall in this place, the suit of Cups and the four Queens. Binah is the highest level of Understanding. Its number is 3. 3 is my favorite number.
• The next Sephira is Chesed or Mercy. The four Fours fall in this place. Chesed is the highest level of the concept of Mercy. Its number is 4.
• The next Sephira is Geburah or Severity. The four Fives fall in this place. Geburah is the highest level of the concept of Severity. Its number is 5.
• The next Sephira is Tiphareth or Beauty. The four Sixes, the Sword suit and the four Princes-Knights fall in this place. Tiphareth is the highest level of Beauty. Its number is 6.
• The next Sephira is Netzach or Victory. The four Sevens fall in this place. Netzach is the highest level of Victory. Its number is 7.
• The next Sephira is Hod or Splendour. The four Eights fall in this place. This is the highest level of Splendour. Its number is 8.
• The next Sephira is Yesod or Foundation. The four Nines fall in this place. This is the highest level of the Foundation. Its number is 9.
• The final Sephira is Malkuth or the Kingdom. The four Tens, the Pentacle suit and the four Princesses-Pages fall in this place. This is the highest level of Kingdom. Its number is 10.

This completes the 10 Sepheroth. The next phase of the 32 Emanations is the 22 Paths.

• Path 11 is the Fool: face value 0, the planet Uranus, and the Hebrew letter א Aleph "Life-Breath. The element of Air. The 11th Path falls between Kether Number 1 and Chokmah Number 2.
• Path 12 is The Magickian: its face value is 1. Its Hebrew letter is ב Beth the House. It is also the planet Mercury. It is located between Kether Number 1 and Binah Number 3.
• Path 13 is the High Priestess: face value 2. Hebrew letter ג Gimel meaning Camel. The Moon. Path 13 is located between Kether Number 1 and Tiphareth Number 6.
• Path 14 is the Empress: face value 3. The Hebrew letter ד Daleth meaning Door or Doorway. The planet Venus. Path 14 is located between Chokmah Number 2 and Binah Number 3.
• Path 15 is the Emperor: face value 4. Hebrew letter ה Heh meaning the Window. The Astrological Sign Aries. The 15th Path is located between Chokmah Number 2 and Tiphareth Number 6.
• The 16th Path is the Hierophant or High Priest; its face value is 5. The Hebrew letter is ו Vav meaning a Nail. The Astrological Sign Taurus. The 16th Path is located between Chokmah Number 2 and Chesed Number 4.
• The 17th Path is the Lovers; its face value is 6. The Hebrew letter is ז Zain meaning the Flaming Sword. The Astrological Sign is Gemini. The 17th Path is located between Binah Number 3 and Tiphareth Number 6.
• The 18th Path is the Chariot or the Charioteer, face value 7. The Hebrew letter is ח Cheth which means Fence or Enclosure. The Astrological Sign Cancer. The 18th Path is located between Binah Number 3 and Geburah Number5.
• The 19th Path is the Strength Trump, face value 8. The Hebrew letter is ט Teth meaning Serpent. The Astrological Sign is Leo. The 19th Path is located between Chesed Number 4 and Geburah Number 5.
• The 20th Path is the Hermit. Face value 9. The Hebrew letter is י Yod meaning Open Hand or Foundation. The Astrological Sign is Virgo. The 20th Path is located between Chesed Number 4 and Tiphareth Number 6.
• The 21st Path is the Wheel of Fortune, face value 10. The Hebrew letter is כ Kaph meaning a Curve. The Planet Jupiter. The 21st Path is located between Chesed Number 4 and Netzach Number 7.
• The 22nd Path is the Justice Trump. The face value is 11. The Hebrew letter is ל Lamed meaning Ox-Goad. The Astrological Sign is Libra. The 22nd Path is located between Geburah Number 5 and Tiphareth Number 6.
• The 23rd Path is The Hanged Man. Face value is 12. The Hebrew letter is מ Mem meaning Water. The Planet Neptune. The Element of Water. The 23rd Path is located between Geburah Number 5 and Hod Number 8.
• The 24th Path is the Death Trump. Face value 13. The Hebrew letter is נ Nun meaning Fish. The Astrological Sign Scorpio. The 24th Path is located between Tiphareth Number 6 and Netzach Number 7.
• The 25th Path is The Temperance-Art. Face value 14. The Hebrew letter is ס Samekh meaning Tent-peg. The Astrological Sign Sagittarius. The 25th Path is located between Tiphareth Number 6 and Yesod Number 9.
• The 26th Path is The Devil-Pan Trump. Face value 15. The Hebrew letter is ע Ayin which means Eye. The Astrological Sign Capricorn. Path 26th is located between Tiphareth Number 6 and Hod Number 8.
• The 27th Path is The Tower. Face value 16. The Hebrew letter is פ Pe means Open Mouth. The Planet Mars. The 27th Path is located between Netzach Number 7 and Hod Number 8.
• The 28th Path is The Star. Face value 17. The Hebrew letter is צ Sadhe means Fish-hook. The Astrological Sign Aquarius. The 28th Path is located between Netzach Number 7 and Yesod Number 9.
• The 29th Path is The Moon. Face value 18. The Hebrew letter is ק Qoph means Back of the Head. The Astrological Sign is Pisces. The 29th Path is located between Netzach Number 7 and Malkuth Number 10.
• The 30th Path is The Sun. Face value is 19. The Hebrew letter is ר Resh means Head. The Sun. The 30th Path is located between Hod Number 8 and Yesod Number 9.
• The 31st Path is The Judgement-Aeon Trump. The Hebrew letter is ש Shin means Tooth-Tooth of Flame. The Planet Pluto. The Element of Fire. The 31st Path is located between Hod Number 8 and Malkuth Number 10.
• The 32nd Path is the World-Universe. The Hebrew letter is ת Taw means Equal-Arm Cross. The Planet Saturn and the Element Earth. The 32nd path is located between Yesod Number 9 and Malkuth 10.

This completes the 32 Emanations of the Qabalistic Tree of Life. I am going to stop here for now. It is now your turn. I want to hear from all of you.
